Orange River Canoeing

It’s been a while since I’ve last written here so let’s see if I can still type a little bit…

A couple of years back, my wife and I took a little holiday canoeing down the Orange River in South Africa through the Richtersveld. It was to put it simply, amazing. We had such a good time that I would love to do it again. The river is lovely, it flows nicely in the direction your paddling, the water is just the right temperature, the scenery is great, the river banks are comfortable and the night sky is fascinating. We’d recommend this trip to anybody who wants a bit of adventure in Southern Africa. The thing is, be picky about who you go with because it could ruin your experience. If you want to know which company was rubbish, just ask and I will fill you in on them.

Besides that, bring along your camera, plenty of water, some treats, plenty of sunblock, mosquito repellent and something to cover your upper body with like a rash vest so you don’t burn. You’ll have a great time and don’t sweat it, it’s not hard work at all and anybody, under the age of 80, should do it. If you’re 80 and fit, do it, but at your own peril!

Do it do it do it!

Racing through the desert to Dakar

One of the coolest races in the world is taking place currently. The Dakar Rallye. It’s a fantastic race with some real tough cookies competing against each other through some of the ruggedest and least forgiving terrain in the world. It’s really worth having a look at the mean machines and racers giving the race a go – www.dakar.com

I use to dream of competing in this race, not sure it will ever happen, but maybe one day, dreams do come true…Now to find the funding… 🙂

No blues in Chicago

We were just in Chicago checking out the city. It’s a great place and they do indeed sing the blues there! There are blues nightclubs all over the place. Not forgetting the great architecture and fantastic skyscrapers and all the rest of the fun things there are to do in such a great city.

The best thing to do while you’re there? Go up the John Hancock Center on a clear night to the 96th floor Signature lounge and have a beer or a glass of wine while staring at the city lights. It’s amazing!

More Popular Cities

It’s been a while! Been travelling for the last 18 days around the US. More specifically, we hit San Francisco, Las Vegas and Chicago before heading home. They are all great cities to visit in their own right. We’ll be adding pages to the Bay City, Vegas and the Windy City shortly so come back and take a look. If you have any tips for these cities, we’ll gladly take them in and see if we can fit them in to the pages to help other visitors enjoy these fantastic cities as well. 🙂

Changing of the Leaves

It’s September already and the more I think about it, the more I realise it is fast approaching the time of year when mother nature decides to give us a treat and dazzle us with a vibrant show of leaves changing to bright red, yellow and orange as the icy cold North American winter arrives. A great place to visit and get to see the leaves change colour in fall is Montreal. The leaves can best be seen just an hour outside of town in the Laurentians or the Eastern Townships. The forests become am amazing sea of vibrant colours! The Eastern US states are also said to be quite good but I prefer the spectacle on offer from my hometown and the beautiful Canadian outdoors. 🙂

Venice

We just added a small page on Venice to the site and it reminded me of something I saw while visiting this great city.

Most of us are accustomed to the local youngsters with the suped-up car, or should I say, piece of crap. You know the type; mags, lowered suspension, flash tyres, stylish lights, custom steering wheel, tinted windows, exhaust make-louder pipe and of course a sound system that is worth more than the car.

Well in Venice, it’s slightly different. Instead of a car, it’s a boat. For real! It’ll have a great new paint job, a great outboard engine, padded seats, tinted visor, chrome mooring hooks and unbelievably, a ridiculously loud and expensive sound system.

When I saw this kid in his purple, show-off boat, I couldn’t resist pointing him out to my then girlfriend, and now wife, and bursting out in laughter.

It just goes to show that no matter what the conditions or location, the obnoxious kid will always be present for you to yell: “Hey you, you’re not cool and nobody cares, turn that shit off!”

The Big Apple

We’ll be adding a page on Gotham City, uh no, New York City pretty soon. What a great place! It’s pumping full of great things to do, people buzzing around and a nightlife to rival any metropolis in the world. One thing though, it’s expensive, be prepared to open your wallet frequently and to dish out some greenbacks repeatedly. But really, who cares, it’s just cash and you’ll have a great time. So come and check our write up on the place, hopefully you can absorb those one or two great tips to help you make the most of your time in NYC.
